How to Braid Hair: 10 Techniques With Videos

hair braided

If you know how to three-strand braid, you can pull this off. There’s nothing more stylish and chic than a perfectly pleated braid. Not only does a nice braid keep your hair out of your face, but it also adds a fun “twist” to your everyday look. If you’re a beginner ready to dive into braiding, this article is perfect for you. By the time you’re done reading, you’ll know the ins and outs of braiding and will have a brand-new look to show off to your friends. Plaits add texture and dimension to your typical space buns and are a cinch to style if you've already got box braids.

Pull-Through Braid

It’s a bold look where a single braid runs from the forehead to the back, with the sides tightly pulled up, braided, or shaved for that rebellious, edgy look. It’s a look that brings back those carefree childhood days but can easily be glammed up with a bit of flexible-hold gel for a more grown-up feel. A 3D braid is like the cool, upgraded version of regular braids.

Dutch Braid

If you know how to cornrow, then try this halo braid out for size. Still, you can pull out a few face-framing pieces to create a more undone, effortless vibe. However, you can give it a go for six to eight weeks with a protective style without a permanent commitment. Vivid blue color takes this A-line cut to the next level. Bubbled hairstyles have been gaining favor in recent seasons.

Stacked Dutch Braids

But the number one way to get better at braiding is just to practice constantly. "There is a lot of technique involved in braiding, especially when you get into the more complex styles," she says. "However, there is a certain rhythm to braiding that comes from experience and confidence." "Once you master the rhythm of a basic braid, you can move on to more intricate styles," Rubenstein says.

My mom wanted to make sure my sister and I weren't mislabeled when we stepped out into the world. Heads turned when Rihanna wore these Fulani braids on the red carpet, and rightly so. The Fenty Beauty founder opted for a medium-length take on the unique braid look, adding little details like perfectly laid edges. With this style, Monae's hair has been pinned in rounded shapes to create a sculptural style. If you're recreating this style, make sure you have tons of bobby pins on hand. Beyoncé is no stranger to braided looks and her swirly cornrows stole the show at The Lion King premiere in 2019.

French Braid

Then, take the right-most piece and cross it over the middle, making it the new middle. Repeat this process over and over until you reach the end of your strands. Waterfall braids look intricate, but luckily, they aren't as complicated as they seem. Think of them like a French braid, but one side of the braid is woven and the opposite part cascades down into the hair.

Continue midway down the ponytail.

Dress up loose lengths with some thoughtfully placed baby braids. Start with two to frame the face before adding a few more throughout for a subtle, eye-catching texture that lends to, rather than overrides, your look. This tri-braided ponytail offers initial inspiration for the creations (and wealth of texture) possible.

After my regular braider wasn't able to schedule me, luckily I got an appointment at Braids Your Way. My male cornrows service was quick and I was in and out in no time. If you already have Fulani braids, this look couldn't be easier. Just take a top section of the braids and pull them up and back (like you would for a half-up ponytail). Secure with a rubber band and let the bottom half hang loose.

Steps

On one side of her head, half of her braids have been twisted and then plaited all the way down. We also love how she’s elevated her look by adding a few silver braid cuffs and styling her edges. Cornrows, or as many love to call it, boxer braids, are one of the coolest braided hairstyle ideas and it’s just as ideal for a tennis match, as it is for a boxing match.

Plus, the updo is perfect for a rainy day—any potential frizz and flyaways may even seem purposeful. You don’t have to be blonde to carry-off this classic style. Two braids with no stray strands (save for some flyaways) skew surf and beach-ready, even if you’re destination is within city limits. Dress up your high, tight ponytail by dividing it into a spray of braids. This approach centers on a main braid that's surrounded by plaits of various sizes, all bound in clear elastics.

Since Serena Williams stepped foot on the world stage, she has rocked braids with pride. You can wear her cornrowed crown with the back of your hair pulled up or down. A simple set of cornrows is always a good look, and Zoe Kravitz's sleek braids will look great with any beauty look you pair it with.

As you can see from Yara Shahidi, actress and activist extraordinaire, cornrows are braids that form narrow parallel strips down the head. To help maintain your style, Dorsey recommends spritzing on the Dark and Lovely Hair Refresher For Protective Styles ($15). Lemonade braids, inspired by Beyoncé’s iconic look in her “Lemonade” album, have taken the world by storm. These neat, side-swept cornrow braids are a homage to African and African-American culture. Add your personal touch with colorful extensions and beads. This look is similar to #7 (you can get it following essentially the same steps) with a slightly lower placement on the scalp and longer braids.

Fulani Braids with a Bun

We love this look, which pairs French braids on the side of the head with a classic half-up, half-down style. Style with face-framing braids, as seen here, to create a fun riff on '90s tendrils. If you're just learning, and if the hair you're braiding is long enough, it may help to start with a low ponytail and braid the hair from there. You can even remove the elastic at the base of the head afterward. And finally, an easy set of two braids is a natural go-to.

An updo like Tia Mowry's won't weigh you down like traditional box braids and will pair well with professional work attire or high-neck tops. When we talk about braided styles for Black women, we usually think of options that require an extended trip to your favorite braider. This style on Ebonee Davis shows that you can switch up your puffs with a smaller set of braids at the roots, leaving much of your curls to do their thing. Kerry Washington looks like a goddess in these two-tone tribal braids.

Two braids plus a beanie equals the ultimate cool girl look, all minus any effort whatsoever. Simply style hair in two plaits and cover your crown with your cap of choice. A crown of cornrows ensures that hair is consistently stylized sans excess effort—save for the initial process, of course. The style protects natural hair from unnecessary breakage and can be executed in various stunning patterns. Similar to the previously mentioned fishtail, a low braid bound on both sides is a chic and simple choice.

A cute, classic, and easy look to recreate are loose French braids. Just braid one on either side of your head and tie them closed at the nape of your neck. Bring your A-game to the tennis court by rocking this easy and quick hairstyle. Simply part your hair at the crown as you create a French or Dutch braid.

To create a waterfall braid, pretend you are beginning a French braid. Section the hair into three pieces, cross the top section over the middle, and, instead of grabbing more hair, let this section hang down. Cross the remaining pieces over one another, then grab a new piece from the top and incorporate it into the braid.

Iconic '70s Hairstyles For Modern Day Disco Glamour

70s hair for women

Whereas Marilisa, artistic director for Marc Anthony Hair Care, and Jennifer Matos, celebrity hairstylist at Rita Hazan, both reference Donna Summer. We'd also like to add Pam Grier, yet another '70s fashion and beauty icon, into the mix. While her style may have been on the cutting edge of fashion in the ’70s, Blondie’s Deborah Harry became a style icon from the ’80s onwards. This pictured style mixes a thick fringe styled with classic ’70s flicks and a punky, choppy bob much less structured than the mainstream pageboy style.

Fluffy White Tapered Pixie

The opposite of the stick straight hairstyle was the all natural curly Afro. Not just worn by African Americans, it too was favored by any women with fine, tight, curly hair. The natural look freed women from the expense of weekly professional hair straightening and styling. The shag hairstyle became iconic in the ‘70s, thanks to rebellious rock stars like Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Rod Stewart.

70+ Gray Pixie for Fine Hair

Adding gold chains to your hairs is something like this – an experiment went right. This hairstyle works with a longer face and shades of blonde hair, although Gigi Hadid showed color-categorizing this style is absolutely redundant with her black hair. If you prefer a short 70s hairstyle, this one is worth pondering over.

Rocker Shag With Bangs

This style has a rounded shape reminiscent of the vintage version, but the textured layers help make things lighter than the ultra-sculpted pageboys of decades past. You can also keep it tight, shiny and add curls at the tip for added effect. If you have a Type 3 or 4 hair texture and want to pay homage to a popular black women hairstyle from the 1970s, you can easily go for an Afro look.

One Look to Rule ‘Em All: 24 Renaissance Hairstyles That We’re Still Crazy Over

Ponytails have a reputation for being casual and somewhat sporty, but you can make a ponytail a simple, elegant updo with the addition of spiral curls. The steps are simple and easy, but the effect looks glam and sophisticated. Then direct the bangs back to your chosen side while moving your brush down (above the eyes) and up (toward your temple). This is an excellent style for women with an oval, round, or square face. If you’re willing to put in the effort, the graduated layers around the face can be curled forward for an elegant look that balances the heavy layers out at the ends.

Wonderful Ideas For Little Girl Haircuts with Bangs

If you have black natural hair, this layered and wild-child look will show off that beautiful texture. The Afro was fashioned into a halo around the head and was worn by both men and women. We also adore this style for showcasing your stunning natural hair! This easy look will just require curly hair and a bold style to complete. When it comes to fashion, the 1970s are the decade that most exemplifies fun and freedom. Not only was 1970s fashion memorable (and still relevant today), but there was also a beauty rebellion.

70s hair for women

Iconic Black Women Hairstyles from the 70s

Then, take your square-shaped scarf and fold it down until it's approximately three inches wide. From there, you will clip all of your hair up so that it is out of the way while you position the scarf so that it is aligned with your center part. Finally, tie the scarf at the nape of your neck, unclip your hair, and spray your hair with a mist to give it a bit of shine. This ear-length hairstyle features wavy locks with choppy ends and a sparkly clip to pin it all in place. Keep this look in your book for both formal and informal occasions. Pigtails that begin just above ears are the perfect height for an updo on all face shapes.

Black women in the 70s fluffed out their Afro hair and wore some of the most iconic styles of hair that you can try right now. All you have to do is let your curly or kinky hair naturally grow out. The length can range from short to long, which would give you wide options to choose from. Adding flowers to your hair is a direct replication of the 70s hair trend.

Timeless Hairstyles From the ‘70s That Will Always Be In Style

Along with the re-emergence of these styles has come the growing popularity of '70s hairstyles. Even singer Ciara rocked the Farrah Fawcett hairstyle on her Instagram profile at one point. To get these mega curls, use a set of hot rollers, or set your hair with some pin curls. Add extra volume by teasing the bottom sections of your hair for some serious lift. Finish with a mist of TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist Extend Hold Level 4 Hair Spray to hold your curls.

For an extra youthful touch, consider adding dimensional highlights to these delicate sections. This big ’70s hairstyle achieves maximum volume while keeping the curls more manageable with a few inches of hair left straight at the roots. With the birth of the punk movement came edgy counterculture hairstyles that had the power to truly shock. This modern mohawk style blends that rebellious spirit with current trends for a look that will turn heads in the best possible way.

Perms were so popular in the ’70s that even men were getting in on the trend. This look keeps things softer and more modern looking with brushed out curls, while still reminding us of the bold ’70s hairstyle. To craft a natural afro that even the disco queen herself would applaud, you must first wash your hair with a volumizing hair care system. After picking out your hair, simply set it with a flexible-hold hairspray to ensure that the hairstyle has staying power. Worn on guys and girls alike, the ’70s afro was shaped into a halo around the head.

A braided low bun looks posh and sophisticated without requiring much effort. The keys to keeping this look elegant and not casual are ensuring the hair is totally smooth and free from tangles and bumps. Short hair is a common choice for ladies who are on the more mature side, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune at the salon.

You’re never too old to get highlights — in fact, they can often be a helpful tool for making your hairstyle dimensional and drawing attention to the face. It’s not hard to quickly transform your hairdo into something spunky and fun. Opt for a super short pixie with choppy layers that stick out nicely. The cut is the right combination of messy and polished, and it looks really fresh. If you’ve gone gray but want to keep things interesting, a lilac tint might be the answer to your prayers. A tiny touch of color adds a lifted, animated look to dull strands, and can be easily maintained by incorporating a purple shampoo into your shower routine.

Haistyles for older women can be elegant, playful, rejuvenating, or all in one! Discover a selection of fashionable haircuts and fresh hairstyle ideas, along with hair color trends for 2024, perfectly suited for women over 70. If you’ve got big, natural curls, there’s no perming required to wear your hair like a glamorous disco hair goddess. These wispy bangs are the perfect option for those who aren’t brave enough to try out blunt, straight-across bangs but still want to hop on the bang bandwagon. Whether you’re looking to channel the effortless cool of the ’70s or add a touch of glamour to your everyday style, these hairstyles offer a wealth of options to explore. So, embrace the spirit of the decade and let your hair tell a story of freedom, self-expression, and timeless beauty with these popular looks.

Subtle shaggy curtain bangs will have you looking like a flower child. Bollywood hairstyles typically feature long dark hair and a lot of teasing to get volume. Use hairspray on a layered hairstyle to pump up your texture and pair it with a fun headband.

Adding a touch of color on the fringe has turned this 70s style into a modern-day trend on social media platforms. You can try one of the most popular 70s hairstyles, the Wedge hair. To get this, you have to layer your hair over and around your head and cut the edges sharply at an angle. This hair can be your next stylistic refuge from regular and common hairstyles. The 1970s has generated tons of different and unique hairstyles that might take days or even months to scrummage through.

Repairs completed in advance also permit substances like caulk or wood putty to dry thoroughly. Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint that requires special treatment. Some brands cost less, but they’re more likely to fade and peel over time, so they’re not a good value. Contractors typically get a discount on better paint because they purchase in bulk. When you’re ready to paint your house exterior, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools. The cost of paint greatly depends on the type and quality you select.

The price may increase if the house needs a lot of preparation or special paint. On the other hand, opting for cheaper paint brands may result in a less durable outcome that requires more frequent repainting, which could increase overall expenses. If you’re looking for the most ideal exterior paint for your home, prioritizing reputable brands can result in a more cost-effective and visually appealing outcome.

The primer coat is an important layer because it seals any exposed wood and provides a good adhesive layer for the finish coats. If the existing paint is in relatively good condition and there won’t be a big change in color, then spot-priming is all that is needed. If the house hasn’t been painted for many years, or there will be a big change in the color, then priming the entire house is necessary. How much of this must be done will depend entirely on the current condition of the existing paint job. It is not typically necessary to strip away all the existing paint.

The cost to paint wood siding is $1 to $3 per square foot, or $1,000 to $3,000 for 1,000 square feet of paintiable area, not including trim. Because even the best wood siding is prone to rot and moisture problems, yours might require some repair or remedial work before you prime and paint. This can increase costs, but, in general, wood siding is easy to paint and care for. Resurfacing concrete costs $3,000 to $5,000 per 1,000 square feet.

Cost to Paint a Home

Vinyl siding typically lasts up to 25 years or more but may fade sooner with extreme weather or sun exposure. The following table shows the average exterior house painting estimate. An average three-bedroom house should take about 3-4 days to paint by a team of two to three painters. That said, if your house is larger than average, has multiple stories, or is more unusual structurally, it may take closer to 5-7 days to do the job properly. Attempting to carry out the painting of your house exterior yourself may cost you more money than it would to hire a professional in the first place. Think about it; if you make a mistake or the final result looks terrible, you could end up having to re-purchase more paint to correct your mistakes.

How Much Does it Cost to Paint a House Exterior?

In addition to covering more surface, painting a multi-story home requires additional equipment. Scaffolds, for example, take longer to erect, move and disassemble, and climbing up and down ladders takes time. Minor repairs are more complicated — tasks that may take only one painter at ground level require two for safety at higher elevations. In general, expect a 20–60% premium for each level your home has in addition to the additional square footage.

The following are some questions for homeowners to ask about the price to paint a house. In addition to being an eyesore, paint that is bubbling or flaking away leaves parts of the home’s exterior exposed. Since the siding material is no longer sealed, water, sun, and pests will have easy access. Sanding off flaking or bubbling paint and applying a fresh coat will protect the home from mold or rotting. Old paint can look discolored or faded, or it can begin to chip and peel. Parts of the home that are shaded will also fade less quickly, resulting in unsightly uneven discoloration.

Sand the Surface

We always recommend contacting a qualified professional decorator or wall coating specialist to assess the scale and complexity of your home. If you want to combat painting exterior walls yourself, you may need to know the supply-only costs. Once you have the total square inches, divide by 144 to get the square feet.

Paint needs to be applied to a dry surface and it shouldn’t be exposed to moisture while it’s drying. It also needs to be warm enough to allow the paint to dry, but not so hot that it causes the paint to bubble. Extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night can also cause drying issues. Remodeling Expenses provides homeowners with accurate cost information on home services and level the playing field for consumers and service professionals. We aim to have data on all US zip codes, so homeowners from all over the country can lookup accurate and up to date pricing information. If your budget is tight, here are a few tips to help you trim the cost of a professional project.

You’ll pay more because there are more raw ingredients in the can, but each gallon covers more surface area and hides older colors more thoroughly. All-in-one paint and primer formulas are thicker versions of regular paint, and their coverage is exceptional. In the long run, you’ll save by using less, and the results will speak for themselves.

For homes that receive a lot of direct sunlight, it’s recommended to choose a lighter color that won’t fade as noticeably. The exterior of the home can be protected with a fresh coat of paint. If the home was built before 1978, the exterior might contain lead paint, and this is something that will need to be handled by an expert. Painting vinyl siding can range from $500 to $2,500, or $1 to $3 per square foot. Vinyl is one of the most affordable exteriors to repaint, and changing the siding finish isn’t recommended unless it’s necessary. When budgeting for the cost to paint a house, there are additional price factors and considerations for homeowners to take into account.

Check with the local permit office or speak to your professional painting contractor to determine if you need to get a permit before work can commence. Typically, you will spend about $200 to $300 for permits to paint the exterior of the home. Additionally, you should check with your HOA, if applicable, to determine if there are any other permits or permissions you need before painting.

Amount of Trim

Not only should you have experience with working at heights, with ladders or scaffolding, but you will also need to understand the handling of chemicals and specialised exterior paints. Achieving a professional result is a lot harder than it may seem, and, if you are unsuccessful, you may end up with a terrible looking finish. This guide discusses everything you need to know about painting the exterior of your home. Including outdoor painters fees, exterior paint prices, things to consider and our frequently asked questions.

By evaluating paint colors at different times of day, you’ll get a better sense of whether or not you’ll like them in the long run. Even a little cloud cover can completely change how a color looks, turning it from a nice sage green to more of a '70s avocado. Watch how the color looks over the course of a few days or a week. That'll help you decide what exterior paint color combination works best for your style and home.

You can expect to pay 50 cents to $3.50 per square foot—or between $1,000 and $6,000 for a house of from 1,500 to 2,500 square feet. This price depends on the type of siding, as different siding varieties require differing prep work, number of coats, and quantities of paint to get a good finish. For example, in Deltona, Florida, the average house painting cost is $1,400 to $3,300.

Average Cost of Paint Per Gallon

Which exterior wall colour might be the right choice is of course individual taste. A 10-litre tub of masonry tub from B&Q costs £20-£50 (the higher-end masonry paint can provide extra benefits like an ultra-smooth finish or waterproofing and UV protection). So, the total cost of masonry paint for an average three-bed home would be around £40-100.

Sand the Surface

To avoid blending the home into its environment too much, paint the top half forest green and the lower half white, as Marshall Watson Interiors did on this Michigan home. A cream and burnt orange color palette looks especially nice on a Spanish-style home, like the 1926 Los Angeles residence of designer Justina Blakeney. The burnt orange window trim and roofing bring out the warmth in the off-white siding. A pale yellow home with white accents is sure to make all who enter, and even those who pass by, smile. For his family’s Florida vacation home, designer Doniphan Moore chose to paint the classic Georgian’s columns in white to contrast with the light yellow walls.

If you had split complex walls into several surfaces, then be sure to add each surface to get the total. Homeowners have several options when it comes to the final appearance of their new or revitalized fence. Fences of all types can be painted a variety of colors if a pop of color is desired, while wooden fences can also be stained to enhance a certain natural hue. Many stains also have different finishes, so homeowners will need to choose a transparent, semi-transparent, or solid finish depending on the look they’re going for. Exterior house painting starts with an assessment of the home’s surroundings.

Professional painters typically charge between $6,250 and $16,250 to paint two-story homes. The average cost, including labor and materials, is around $8,925. Our house painting cost estimator helps you not overpay for a professional painting contractor or estimate the amount of paint to buy for your painting project. For example, single-story homes might be relatively straightforward to paint, with easy access to all surfaces.

Exterior painting cost estimates

To find the square footage of your home, measure your house’s length and width and multiply those numbers. If the scaffolding needs to be on a footpath, which is particularly common in city areas, additional costs of approx. £60 – £120 (for one month) must be paid for a permit from the local community. Painters charge $150 to $300 to paint a front door and the exterior frame.

If you want to save money on your project, choose fiber cement siding for repainting. The average cost per square foot for this material is $1.30 to $3.35. Vinyl siding, however, has a significantly higher price range of $0.55 to $2.60 per square foot. If you plan to make drastic paint color changes or have surfaces like brick or stucco, you should budget an extra 50%. Usually, you’ll need a fresh coat of primer and two coats of paint for good coverage.

Over time, dirt, mold, mildew and other contaminants can build up on the home’s siding or trim. So, the first step to painting outside of the house is to remove these things from the existing paint. A pressure washer is a good tool to use for cleaning the exterior of the house.

Pair bright versions of them as exterior house colors, and your home will exude a lively energy that’s simultaneously calming. For this San Francisco Victorian, Kelly Finley used Benjamin Moore Imperial Yellow to blend the garage and siding, and Bedford Blue to cover the stairs and front door. From traditional to modern, these exterior paint color schemes will instantly boost your home's curb appeal. Once the primer is dry, it’s time to apply caulk around window trim and any other gaps. Caulk seals gaps, preventing water from getting behind trim and siding. It also smooths transitions between the siding, trim and other similar transitions.

Exterior siding prep work can cost anywhere from $0.50 to $2.50 per square foot—don’t fret, this is often included in your square footage painting cost. Paint prep work can include scraping, sanding, stripping, power washing, caulking, replacing siding and more. Most local contractors will give free painting estimates, so get more than one quote to ensure you get the best price on your fresh coat of paint.

Late spring, summer, and early fall are the best times to paint a house exterior. Painting in the fall or early winter is ideal in southern states that stay warm year-round. Painting a deck, front porch, or patio costs $2 to $5 per square foot, depending on the size, material, layout, and condition. Flat or Matt exterior paints are expected to last between 5-7 years before they start to deteriorate.

Homeowners who choose to paint their fence enjoy a variety of benefits, no matter if it’s a new or old fence. Some of these benefits include better protection from weather, an increased lifespan, and improved aesthetics—all of which contribute to an increased property value.

You will need to be in your home and on a mobile device with a rear-facing camera that is connected to your home’s wi-fi. Painting trim is usually done separately from the rest of the house. Painting trim is usually done by hand with greater attention to details. If your project includes trim, or your home has a lot of trim, it could increase the pricing for your project.

Cruise to Princess Cays

princess cay carnival cruise

More likely, cruise guests arriving at Princess Cays will look forward to private beach amenities ideal for relaxation or outdoor adventure. If you're looking for fun in the sun, Princess Cays weather patterns can be welcoming year-round. Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay are both very similar destinations, but they’re not identical. They offer similar water sports activities, but Half Moon Cay has the more unique experience of horse riding through the sea.

Princess Cays for Kids

The warm waters are teeming with brightly-colored fish and other sea creatures. After our boat tour, we walked around awhile to explore the island. It’s a beautiful island full of colorful buildings, some shops and vendors alongside the beach. You can take many other excursions which will take you on tours of the island if you wish to see more.

How do you get to Princess Cays?

Half Moon Cay is a small private island, whereas Princess Cays is a resort on the island of Eleuthera. Guests tend to love that feeling of exclusivity in a tropical destination, away from the bigger crowds. Cruise lines can make the most of this through exclusive excursions and activities that attract more guests and can bring in more cash, too.

Everything You Need to Know About Princess Cays

There are 25 private cabanas, called bungalows, on Princess Cays. Each one is a small hut-like structure in a different bright, tropical color, with a small deck, an umbrella for shade and an outdoor shower. There are 18 bungalows situated in the main section of the beach, and seven additional adults-only (age 18 and up) bungalows in a restricted Sanctuary area of the beach. Princess Cays was the first cruise line private island to expand their Wi-Fi to allow for onshore connectivity back in 2018. The Grill Crazy BBQ is located in the northern part of the island near North Beach and the snorkeling area.

The temperature of the waters was perfect and we loved how calm the waves were. They have cabana rentals and rentals for tubes and other floating devices. We brought our own tubes with us and were able to use those instead of renting tubes. If it’s a toy that belongs in the water, you’re likely to find it here. You can even rent out a hobie sailboat for by the hour for up to three people.

What Equipment Rentals are Available at Princess Cays?

Read on to find out everything you need to know about Princess Cays. Private cabanas and air-conditioned beach bungalows are available to rent, but you need to book ahead of time. Ideal for families, these brightly colored bungalows are equipped with beach chairs and provide shade overlooking the beach. Consult with the cruise line before your cruise (and again with the crew on board) if you use a mobility device. If you’re visiting on a Princess cruise, you can use your beverage package (except the specialty coffee package) on the island.

Or, bring your own snorkel gear to explore the quiet coves of Princess Cays and the coral reefs and mangroves of the Caribbean Sea. This guide to everything you need to know about Princess Cays shares how it stands out among the other private islands in the Bahamas. Just as onboard, there is a free buffet and BBQ near the Princess Cays pier for cruisers to enjoy an excellent selection of delicious meats, salads and desserts. Cast a line and see what you can hook on this 2.5-hour fishing tour. You’ll be fishing from a stretch of rocky coastline using a spinning reel. Catch and release is preferred as fish cannot be taken back onboard.

But you could also venture deeper by booking a tour of the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve. See the Bahamian native habitat up close and enjoy the kind of peace that comes from communing with nature. Follow our social media and blog for the latest cruise and travel news, including our best vacation deals. Princess Cays may be a relatively small resort but it still packs a lot of activities into that space, without ever feeling too crowded either. While in some cruise ports, you might still get hassled, but that shouldn’t happen at Princess Cays.

Do You Have to Book Excursions in Princess Cays?

Visitors on a Carnival cruise can’t use any shipboard drinks packages on Princess Cays. Princess Cays is Princess Cruises’ private island destination on the island of Eleuthera. The southern tip of Eleuthera is reserved for cruise guests, while the rest of the island is populated and open to the public. The word “cay”, meaning a small, low island, is generally pronounced like the word “key”. You’ll hear the ship’s crew and other passengers referring to the private destination as Princess “Key”, Princess “Keys”, Princess “Kay”, or Princess “Kays”. Locals, including the salespeople at the straw markets, tend to call the area Princess “Key”.

The Crow’s Nest is an overlook tower that rises three stories high and is the place for photos of the island or your ship. Don’t forget about the thousands of sun loungers where you can veg out with a cold drink and a good book. Points of interest include gorgeous pink sandy beaches, quaint towns such as Rock Sound, caves, and unusual geological formations such as the Glass Window Bridge. Experience true Bahamian life with local churches, schools, and markets.

There isn’t a large swimming pool at Princess Cays, although there is a small paddle pool at the kids’ play area Pelican’s Perch. Guests are instead able to swim and enjoy water sports on the ocean, which has crystal-clear warm waters. This food is provided by the cruise line, with staff bringing it ashore and preparing it on the island during the morning. It’s similar to what you would get at the buffet restaurant on the ship but with more of a focus on burgers, chicken and other BBQ favourites. A buffet is provided for all guests to enjoy close to the tender pier, which includes a selection of barbecue favourites, salads and some tasty sweet treats.

If you have purchased an unlimited drink package on your ship, you can receive drinks through that program on Princess Cays. Drinks for non-package holders will be charged at normal menu prices. The pre-purchase window for certain products and activities closes between one and three days prior to the sail date.

Each bungalow is equipped with a ceiling fan, a table and four chairs, and an outdoor shower. Your bungalow will be stocked with towels, two flotation rafts to use for the day, and a cooler full of soft drinks and water. If you’re looking for an active day out on the water, Princess Cays has you covered with lots of water sports to choose from! You can book a guided activity or rent equipment for a DIY option.

Between North Beach and the snorkeling area is the Offshore Pavilion. This is a great spot to watch colorful fish swimming around its piers. It’s also a good place to snap a pic of your ship, especially if you don’t want to climb the stairs to the top of the Crow’s Nest.

However (as with many tender ports) wheelchair or scooter access on the tender boats isn’t guaranteed. If you have mobility challenges, the north side of the resort is wheelchair-friendly, while the south side does have a few steps leading up to and down from the bridge that accesses that area. The eastern side of the resort is bordered by Paradise Lagoon, a tranquil body of water where the kayaking excursions launch. The First Aid building, which you’ll see as soon as you exit the tender, is available for anyone needing emergency medical attention (or just a bandage or ice pack) during your visit.

Winter tends to be the dry season at Princess Cays, while summers bring more rain and often daily thunderstorms. Hurricane season in the Bahamas runs from June 1 through November 30. While you’re exploring Princess Cays, there are a few other points of interest you might like to check out. More unusual souvenirs in these shops include crystal jewelry, dinnerware, leather accessories, and decorative wood carvings. You can even take home some of the famous Andros batik fabric, either by the yard or made into table linens or resort wear. The shops also sell a nice selection of typical souvenirs including t-shirts, mugs, shot glasses, and other trinkets with a Bahamas theme.

Alcoholic drinks always come at an additional cost, but if you have a beverage package onboard your Princess ship, it extends here ashore. The water was a perfect temperature and the waves were very calm and relaxing. We literally didn’t want to leave the water, except to take a break for lunch or drinks. The first thing the girls noticed about the island was how cool the sand is.  Even though the sun was shining, the coral the beach rests upon keeps the sand a perfectly cool temperature.

Sail past coastal mangroves and quiet lagoons before reaching pristine coral reefs inhabited by colorful species of fish. You will see plenty of colorful marine fish, anemones, different types of corals, and other sea creatures if you’re lucky.

When we finally did take a break from the ocean, we enjoyed sitting at the bars with frozen concoctions (they have kid friendly ones as well). Guests aged 18, 19 and 20 won’t be able to buy any alcoholic drinks while at the resort. If you do want to explore Eleuthera you also have to make sure you’re back in time for the last tender boat back to the ship. Cruise passengers are able to leave Princess Cays and explore the rest of Eleuthera if you want to – it’s not fenced off. Just be aware that most of the best attractions will be found at Princess Cays.

Search Should Be Cruising

The island of Eleuthera has over 11,000 inhabitants and offers some fascinating highlights best discovered on a guided tour (see below). One of the best known residents is singer-songwriter Lenny Kravitz who recorded a song called Eleutheria (Freedom) in 1993. Princess Cays covers an area of 40 acres at the south end of Eleuthera Island.

The outdoor shower (essentially a small spigot at head -height) allows you to rinse off with fresh water after your ocean swim. Each bungalow is equipped with four chairs, a small table and a ceiling fan inside the air-conditioned structure. The building functions as a good spot for dining or cooling off, and can be locked if you wish to leave your valuables inside while you explore the beach. There are two lounge chairs outside your bungalow on a private deck. Guests need to tender when going onshore at Princess Cays, as the water is too shallow for the cruise ship to dock. Once on the island, there is an information center and many posted maps to guide passengers along the walkways.

Choose from the main Princess Cays beach bungalows -- good for families -- or the Adults Sanctuary Bungalows in a private, 18-and-over area of the beach. All bungalows accommodate four, and two extra passengers can be added for an additional fee. On a buggy drive beyond Princess Cays Bahamas, you'll pass ruins of houses and the 18th-century Anglican Church of the Assumption. Drivers must be 21 or older with a valid driver's license and passengers must be 10 years of age or older.

One of these sailings will present you with more options when it comes to selecting the perfect date, especially if sailing on Carnival, as their fleet is larger. Guests can use their Princess drink packages on the island, or they can charge beverages to their onboard account. There are a number of spots dotted through the island to get a cold drink or a cocktail. At the northern end of the resort is Bahia Bar, close to the end of North Beach. Eleuthera has abundant marine life and clear water, making it a great place to snorkel and partake in other water activities.
